Who does not know cassava (Manihot utilissima). The plants easily found in the plantation or not rare in the backyard. It's easy because cassava is grown. In many parts of the world, such as Africa, Central America, South America, and Asia (including Indonesia), tubers can be grown in the tropics and sub-tropics is even a staple food for most people.
Not only for human consumption, cassava was also good to be used as fish feed mainly on the leaves. Is Sukarman, Fish Nutrition Research in Ornamental Fish Aquaculture Research Center, Depok, West Java, who conducted the research by making flour cassava leaves as an alternative protein source to feed the fish.
This study is based on growing concerns about the soaring price of fish meal (protein feed raw material) from day to day. Therefore, feed prices continue to skyrocket and become increasingly burdensome fish farmers.
Sukarman mention, cassava leaves are the raw materials of feed protein that is cheap and easy to come by. Indonesian cassava production reached 21 million tons per year was ranked the 4th world after Nigeria, Thailand, and Brazil. "So no need to bother about kertersediaan raw materials," said Sukarman.
He added that, unlike cassava grains (soybeans and corn) that stores protein and carbohydrates in the seeds. These plants store starch (carbohydrates) in the tuber, whereas the protein stored in the leaves. Due to the low protein content, cassava is rarely used in poultry feed and fish, more commonly used as animal feed, especially cattle. "People do not know that a lot of good protein for poultry and fish actually present in cassava leaves," he said.

Protein for Fish
Questioning protein for fish, Sukarman mention a very important thing. Because 70% of the dry weight of organic matter consisting of fish tissue protein. Even so, the fish do not need protein in the true sense, but requires a balanced combination of 20 essential amino acids and non-essential proteins that make up the primary. "Because the content of protein and amino acids of raw materials, including leaves of cassava flour must be recorded correctly," he explained.
For flour protein content of cassava leaves ranged 25-28%, fat 7-13%, crude fiber 12-17%, calcium 1.3 to 1.4%, 0.3% phosphorus; lysine 2%; methionin 0.4% , and threonine 3%. Nutritional content of cassava leaf powder is equivalent to an alternative raw material sources of protein such as DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles / by-product of ethanol production), lamtoro leaf powder, and others. "Even its lysine content of lysine in soybean meal approach," said Sukarman.
About technically making cassava leaf powder according to the father of two children is very easy and simple. The first, cassava leaves are not too young di-copper/cacah, then dried in the sun for about 2-3 days. "Once dried cassava leaves, then ground with a grinding machine," he explained.
