FISH HAVE numeracy skills

FISHWORLDs.com - Based on a study of angel fish (angelfish), scientists concluded that the fish could differentiate a lot or a little plus be able to count from 1 to 3.

Gerlai and Luis Gomez-Lalpaza from the University of Oviedo, Spain, attracted by the notion that the angel fish chose to join the large herd when in a foreign environment. They do it for the sake of security.

Gerlai and his team put the fish in a special tank. The fish exposed to the two swarms with different amounts. The researchers then recorded the fish shoal selected.

The result, angel fish is able to choose the larger herd when the difference between the number of swarms is two-fold. When the difference in the amount of less than two times, the fish selection is unpredictable. With these findings, the researchers concluded that fish angel can predict the number of swarms.

Besides being able to predict the amount, angel fish can also be more precise count. "For example, fish can distinguish 2 to 3," Gerlai exemplifies. "This capability shows the calculation of the individual, rather than simply estimating the number," he said. Gerlai also explained, numeracy angel fish is limited to 3.

The scientists conjecture, numeracy on this fish had no benefits for fish. "Hence, this ability did not evolve," said Gerlai.

Unlike numeracy, the ability to predict the number of swarms has advantages for angel fish. They chose their herd more predictions for security and foraging.
