GENERAL FISH BIOLOGY NIASA
Melanochromis auratus is a freshwater fish that belong to the Cichlid family. This fish comes from the south of Lake Malawi (or many are called Lake Nyasa), especially around Jalo Reef up to Crocodile Rocks in Africa. Because of its place of origin, many are calling this fish as Niasa. One of the unique fish, is that it can change color from yellow to predominantly black dominant. This led to the identification of sex auratus bit confusing, because it is basically the dominant color Melanochromis auratus male fish are fish dominant black color while females are yellow Melanochromis auratus. Nevertheless, it remains a very interesting fish to be maintained in the aquarium.
Fish Melanochromis auratus females have bright yellow color with black and white stripes at the top of his body. Young fish also have characteristic colors like this, be it male or female. While fish Melanochromis auratus males have a dark color / black at the bottom of her blue and yellow stripe at the top of his body.
